Going Under

VID00151, originally uploaded by hergan family.

Saturday Morning at Guppy Gulch featured crystal clear water. Here his a video of Laurie in her hot pink drysuit and fins going under. The opening seen is a cinder block on the bottom in 6 feet of water. The visability off the docks was unbeliveable. All the platfroms were clearly visable.

Waterslide Testing for Broad Creek’s Guppy Days

waterslide testing, originally uploaded by hergan family.

We decided to add another thrill to Broad Creeks Guppy Day. It was my first time down the slide without a kayak and it was awsome! I was not sure what to expect but as you can see I shot off the end of the slide and into the quarry with no problem. The slide is a little bumpy because we made it out of drainage pipe.

Saturday at the Gulch – a little adventure with the kids

guppy gulch 72608c, originally uploaded by hergan family.

The kids and I stopped by Guppy Gulch today to assist Grandpa Steve with rebuilding one of the docks. Here is some video of a few of the divers. It looked like an underwater photography/video class was going on in addition to several checkout dives from area scuba shops.

I added the video to the flickr group if you would like to download it.

The history of Guppy Gulch

Ken Parrish has been diving at the gulch for over 20 years.

Ken Parrish has been diving at the gulch for over 20 years.

Guppy Gulch has been a busy place since being opened to divers in the
mid-70s.  Those early visitors were definitely roughing it.  There was a
narrow path to the water and a one lane gravel “road” into and out
of the parking lot that flooded whenever it rained.  At that time, the
facility was known as Rhodes Quarry.  Time went on and we killed lots of
poison ivy, added a parking lot, dressing rooms and even restroom
facilities.  There are docks, training platforms and a number of
underwater attractions.  It is a far cry from the early days.

Anyone remember those early days?   My favorite experience was meeting
at the bakery/deli at the corner of Main Street and rt. 136.  Tom, the
propeitior, made the best bear claws ever.  Those cinnamon and sugar
treats nearly made jumping into the cold water of the Gulch in January
worth it.

A Unique Diving Experience

Preparing for a checkout dive

Preparing for a checkout dive

Mention scuba and most people think of magnificent coral reefs and
beautiful tropical fish.  Few, if any, would automatically think of the
spring-fed quarries scattered throughout Pennsylvania and what an
opportunity they would be missing.  Guppy Gulch has been the home for
training and recreational divers in southeastern Pennsylvania for nearly
two decades.  Fresh water, no currents, lots of fish and friendly fellow
divers.  Hundreds of people have had their first scuba experience at
Guppy Gulch.  Maybe you are one of them.  Share your thoughts and
experiences.
