The history of Guppy Gulch

Guppy Gulch has been a busy place since being opened to divers in the
mid-70s.  Those early visitors were definitely roughing it.  There was a
narrow path to the water and a one lane gravel “road” into and out
of the parking lot that flooded whenever it rained.  At that time, the
facility was known as Rhodes Quarry.  Time went on and we killed lots of
poison ivy, added a parking lot, dressing rooms and even restroom
facilities.  There are docks, training platforms and a number of
underwater attractions.  It is a far cry from the early days.

Anyone remember those early days?   My favorite experience was meeting
at the bakery/deli at the corner of Main Street and rt. 136.  Tom, the
propeitior, made the best bear claws ever.  Those cinnamon and sugar
treats nearly made jumping into the cold water of the Gulch in January
worth it.
